For a podcast to be great, it needs to be edited in a great way!

If you are currently editing your podcast yourself, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do people need to turn the volume up and down when listening to your podcast?

  • When going from podcast episode to podcast episode, do they need to turn the volume up and down?

  • Does music sound bad when integrated into your podcast?

  • Do transitions sound bad when going from segment to segment?

  • Do you consistently have audio issues that you just live with?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should consider one of our classes on podcast editing in Audacity. Podcast editing is trickier than it seems-just because you do it, doesn’t mean that you do it well.

To get the best sound out of your podcast you’ll need to know how to remove noise, correct fixable sound issues, adjust levels, incorporate music and sound effects, create consistency across segments and properly remove filler words. We can show you how to do all of that and more!

Pay a podcast editor, utilize AI or learn from Podcast Doc?

Pay a podcast editor – I was a podcast editor for a long time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to a qualified podcast editor to edit your podcast. However, there are a few potential issues that you should consider.

  • How much are you spending on podcast editing? Depending on the length of the podcast and the detail of the edit, editing can range from $20(for something very short and very simple to edit) to $500(for something about 1.5 hour with a very detailed edit). Depending on the frequency of your podcast, these costs can add up very quickly.

  • What happens when your editor goes on vacation? Professional editors take vacations too. The question is, what are you going to do when your editor goes on vacation? Find another editor and explain all the nuances of your podcast to them and hope they get it right? Good luck with that.

  • What happens if the podcast isn’t quite how you want it? Sometimes it can be very difficult to explain, exactly what you want out of an edit. So, if you are going through a freelancer website, you typically can only contact each other via the platform messaging system. This means that you’ll need to be able to fully write out everything that you want. This includes the way the music should come in, how the segments should be pieced together, what should be removed and how the podcast should flow.

Utilize Podcast AI – I think AI is the future of technology. I also believe that we are currently in the beginning stages of AI. In my opinion, we are currently living in the time of the AI equivalent of the original Nintendo. I can only imagine what AI will look like 20 to 30 years from now. In my opinion, AI works very well for basic podcast editing but not detailed editing.

Podcast AI, in my opinion, seems to work well for:

  • Noise removal

  • Normalizing Audio

  • Sound Leveling (in a most cases, but if levels are too far off or there is a lot of noise on one track and not the other it could make it difficult for AI to handle)

Podcast AI, in my opinion, does not seem to work well for:

  • Music Integration – Intros/Outros and Sound Effects

  • Filler Word Removal – Filler words are not created equally. If you have isolated filler words, then AI could work well to remove those. If your filler words are not isolated and run together with your normal speech, then the removal of the filler words can sound horrible. In fact, it would be better to leave the filler words intact rather than remove them with AI.

Depending on your needs, you may not need detailed editing. If this is the case, I recommend Podcastle AI to complete your basic podcast editing.

Learn Podcast Editing from Podcast Doc – When you learn podcast editing from Podcast Doc, you get an instructor that has studied instructional design, crafted 14 different eLearning courses, coached students both individually and in groups and has personally edited over 1000 podcasts.

This podcast editing class by Podcast Doc is for podcasters who simply want to gain the necessary skills to be able to edit their podcast properly and current or aspiring podcast editors looking to create side or full-time income by editing podcasts.

Here’s what you get:

  • Pre-Recording Process – This is quite possibly the BEST piece of advice I can give you when it comes to podcast editing,” Garbage In Garbage Out”. We’ll go over the best practices before you even begin recording and what to do when there are issues.

  • Editing Process – This is where we will go over the process of editing…Where should you begin? How should you organize your notes? What is the proper order of work.

  • Cutting the Audio – I love using AI, but I have yet to see AI properly handle the removal of filler words. Removing filler words is an art and even many seasoned podcast editors are not capable of properly removing filler words. This is also where we take out sentences, topics, mistakes, and other whatever else you want to take out. I’ll show you how to do it, when to do it, and when you shouldn’t do it.

  • Noise Removal – This refers to the constant sound that is in your podcast and not the dynamic noise that occurs from dogs barking or kids playing in the background. This is a must for any recorded audio that is to be broadcast to the public.

  • Compression – This might be the single biggest thing that podcasters struggle with when trying to edit their podcast. This is how you level out the sound to bring the podcast volume to an industry level. Simply raising the volume is not enough. Simply normalizing the audio is not enough. If you want a consistent sound every time, you must learn how to properly use compression.

  • Normalization/Loudness – We’ll discuss how to check the average sound levels before you publish the podcast. You want to make sure your podcast levels are consistent from podcast episode to podcast episode.

  • Music Integration – We’ll show you how to integrate music into your podcast in Audacity. You’ll learn the different ways music can be used for intros/outros, transitions and accents for your podcast. I’ll show you how to properly source non-royalty music for your podcast.

  • Troubleshooting Techniques – We’ll show you what do if there is echo, distortion, cross channel interference, plosives and more. Some issues can be fixed and some issues cannot be fixed. I’ll give you my professional opinion of when you should try to salvage a recording and when you should scrap it and start over.

  • Business of Podcast Editing – For those that want to make money with their new skills, we’ll discuss the business of podcast editing. What are the current rates, where to find work, how to properly charge for your time and more.

  • Lots of opportunities for hands on work – This isn’t a course for you to just listen idly. This class is designed for you to follow along and participate. You’ll be given access to the files needed for this class. Learn, Do, and Be Transformed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. When will the online on-demand class be officially ready to purchase?

A. I am anticipating releasing the on-demand class in late April or early May of 2024. If you would like to be notified when it’s ready, please sign up to the waitlist.

Q. Will I receive the recording of my private podcast editing class?

A. Yes. With your permission, I will record the Zoom meeting of our session. You will receive a link to this recording that you can access to forever.

Q. Can you please explain why the private podcast editing class says “up to 4 hours” for the time length?

A. The real value in the private podcast editing class is that you get direct access to a proven professional in the art of podcast editing. I made the class up to 4 hours so that the learner would have ample time to ask questions on any of the topics we discuss. Some of the items that we discuss could be easily digested, while other topics may take a little more time. In either case, we should have ample time to discuss everything you need to edit your podcast.

Q. Will the private podcast editing learners be given access to the on-demand class when it is available?

A. Yes.

Q. Will the instructor be Podcast Doc or someone else?

A. As of right now, Podcast Doc is the only instructor. If that ever changes, this page will be updated with the information about the new instructors.

Q. Is this class for video or audio only podcasts?

A. This class is for audio only podcasts. We will not cover any video editing.

Q. Is this Podcast Doc podcast editing class available on other platforms?

A. No. This is not currently available on any other platform, nor do we plan to ever have this class available on other platforms in the future.
